Things that need to be added as specified items

It can be tricky to decide which of your belongings need to be added as specified items &ndash; and which belongings would be covered by the general personal possessions cover optional extra. 
 
So here&rsquo;s a brief side-by-side summary to help you work out which one is right for you:

Your contents insurance policy has a single item limit of &pound;1,500.&nbsp;So unless you&rsquo;ve added them to our policy as a specified item, you won&rsquo;t be covered if you made a claim. 
 
If you own any items worth more than &pound;1,500, these items need to be added to your policy separately as specified items to make sure you&rsquo;re covered.

You need to specify home entertainment equipment, valuables and personal effects worth more than &pound;1,500. This might include:

What happens when I make a claim for a specified item?

If you need to make a claim for your specified items, we&rsquo;ll ask you to send us proof of ownership which could be a receipt, or a photo of you wearing or using the item.&nbsp;

Do I need to have something valued before I add specified items?

You don&rsquo;t usually need to have your belongings valued to add them as specified items. 
 
However, we might ask for a valuation every three years for some high-value items (such as jewellery). This would be added to your policy as an endorsement, which is a condition that changes your cover. Don&rsquo;t worry, we&rsquo;ll let you know if this applies when you buy your policy or add specified items.

If you&rsquo;ve got any belongings worth more than &pound;1,500 or bicycles worth more than &pound;350, just tell us and we&rsquo;ll add them to your contents insurance policy as specified items. Don&rsquo;t worry, we&rsquo;ll let you know how this will affect the price of your insurance before we go ahead with any changes to your policy.

When you buy contents insurance, you&rsquo;ll choose a policy that will cover your belongings up to a certain limit (for instance, Hastings Premier will cover your belongings up to &pound;150,000). 
 
However, certain items must be added to your home contents policy separately so they&rsquo;re covered &ndash; known as being &lsquo;specified&rsquo;. 
 
You can choose if these specified items are only covered in your home contents policy, or covered outside the home too. Just let us know if you&rsquo;d like them covered away from your home when you&rsquo;re adding the items to your policy.

If you want cover for any bicycle worth over &pound;350, then you must add it as a specified item too, otherwise it won&rsquo;t be covered. The bicycle will be covered anywhere in the British Isles for the time of the policy, and anywhere in the world for up to 60 days.
