Information about your settlement

The market value of your vehicle is the price we think your vehicle would have sold for right before an incident happened.

 
To work out the market value of your specific vehicle, we look at your vehicle&rsquo;s make, model, specification, age and mileage as well as other information.

 
In most cases, we base the market value on multiple industry-recognised guides, adjusting where appropriate to reflect the price the vehicles actually sold for. These guides are used across the motor industry and provide prices for the majority of vehicles.&nbsp;

If you've bought a new car, or might be replacing your current one, you can update your details or check how much it would cost by: 

We checked whether your vehicle had a full MOT at the time of the accident. When we did this check, the result showed that there was not a full MOT on your vehicle at this time.

 
A vehicle with no valid MOT, has a lower market value, and because you are covered for the market value of the vehicle on this policy, we have made an adjustment to reflect this.

The value we place on your vehicle reflects the condition of the vehicle at the time of the accident. When we assessed your vehicle, we found that it had damage from before the accident took place.

 
This could include scuffs and scrapes (interior or exterior) or more major damage.

 
A vehicle with pre-accident damage has a lower market value, and because you are covered for the market value of the vehicle on this policy, we have made an adjustment to reflect this.

Your claim is not going to be settled in full because we found that something wasn&rsquo;t declared to us when you bought your policy - this could be something like a claim or a conviction.

 
The price of your policy is worked out by the details you give us in your quote &ndash; and you are responsible for answering all our questions honestly, making sure everything you tell us is true and accurate. If we had known about this information at the time, we would have charged a higher premium.

 
What this means for you 
 
We will now pay a proportion of your claim, which is based on the percentage of premium you have paid against what we would have charged you with the correct information.

An excess is a pre-agreed amount of money that you need to pay when you make a claim.

 
The amount was confirmed when you took out your policy and is written in the policy documents you received.

 
This excess needs to be paid even if you believe you weren&#39;t to blame for what happened. However, if we get agreement from the other driver&rsquo;s insurer that you weren&rsquo;t to blame, you will be entitled to a refund. If this happens, we will contact you to let you know.

To make a claim, your policy must have been paid in full. As you pay your insurance by monthly Direct Debit, we&rsquo;ve deducted the total value of any remaining monthly payments from your settlement amount.

 
Once we make a payment for your vehicle, your regular Direct Debit payments will stop so you will not pay twice.

 
The exact amount deducted can vary due to daily interest charges, usually by a few pence.

As your vehicle has been purchased with vehicle finance, we pay your finance company for any money you owe them because they hold a financial stake in the vehicle until the loan is repaid. This money is then deducted from any settlement amount.

 
We directly pay the finance company first (as outlined in our policy documents) because most finance companies specify that by signing the agreement, you are authorising the direct payment of this money from the insurer to your finance company in the event your vehicle is written off.

 
This means that by us doing so, it speeds up the process and ensures you keep to the terms of your finance agreement.

Your vehicle has been in an accident before this one where it was written off and this was recorded against the vehicle history. Written off vehicles can sometimes be repaired and put back on the road and this may have happened before you purchased the vehicle.

 
A vehicle that has a history of being written off, has a lower market value than if it hadn&rsquo;t been and because you are covered for the market value of the vehicle on this policy, we have made an adjustment to reflect this.

 
Unfortunately this is still true, even if you bought the vehicle without knowing about its history.
