In line with guidance from the Government and to help look after our colleagues, most of our team are now working from home and are taking calls. However, waiting times are longer than normal and the quality of the call may not be as clear as if we were talking to you from our call centre. We're committed to supporting you in the best way we can and will be here throughout to keep you updated so make sure to check back regularly.

At this time, please help us to prioritise essential calls by using our online services.

  • If you're a car customer you can use MyAccount or the app to make policy changes or payments, including changing your payment date, checking your documents or to report or track a claim (MyAccount only).
  • If you're a home, bike or van customer, you can make policy changes or requests using our online forms.

If you do phone, we may only be able to deal with your query if:

  • Your policy is due to renew and you're concerned it's no longer suitable for you or you're thinking of cancelling your insurance, or
  • You are worried about making future payments, or
  • You're in a vulnerable situation or an NHS or frontline health care worker who can't easily access our online services, or
  • You need to make a claim and your vehicle is un-driveable or if you need urgent roadside assistance.

For all other queries, including buying a new policy, please first read our Coronavirus FAQs for the latest advice and help to use our online services.

Our opening hours have changed to: Monday to Friday 9am-6pm and Saturday 10am-2pm.

Van personal accident cover

Why is personal accident cover important?

While responsible drivers do everything they can to drive safely, sometimes accidents are unavoidable.

It's better to plan for the unexpected rather than ignore the risk altogether. Personal accident cover offers financial compensation for a range of injuries to help you and others recover. A comprehensive Hastings Direct or Hastings Premier policy includes £5,000 of personal accident cover for you and your spouse / partner as standard. Enhanced personal accident cover provides a greater level of cover for you and your passengers in the event of a car accident.

Common injuries

The severity of injuries depends on lots of things, for example speed, seatbelt use, what the car made contact with, and the safety features of the cars involved.

According to road safety charity Brake, the most common injuries sustained from car accidents are:

Facial injuries

These could include cuts or punctures to the skin, broken bones (such as noses and jaws), and eye injuries resulting in blindness or partial blindness.

Spinal injuries

Road accidents account for the largest cause of spinal cord injuries on a global scale. During a car accident it's possible for spinal nerves below the area of injury to become partially or fully cut off from the brain, which can lead to paralysis of limbs or areas of the body.

Head injuries

Around one million people visit A&E departments every year with a form of brain trauma and road incidents account for 40-50% of all brain injuries. Those suffering from head trauma sometimes find their memory or speech is affected.

Limb loss

Serious incidents can also result in the loss of an arm or leg, which can seriously affect quality of life for the sufferer.

Hastings Direct enhanced personal accident cover

We offer enhanced personal accident cover, which provides additional and increased benefits for you and up to six passengers.

Full terms and conditions can be found in our additional products booklet.

Protect your van with flexible insurance options including breakdown cover and legal protection, so if things go wrong you can get back to work as soon as possible.
