In line with guidance from the Government and to help look after our colleagues, most of our team are now working from home and are taking calls. However, waiting times are longer than normal and the quality of the call may not be as clear as if we were talking to you from our call centre. At this time, please help us to prioritise essential calls by using our online services.

  • If you're a car customer you can use MyAccount or the app to make policy changes or payments, including changing your payment date, checking your documents or to report or track a claim (MyAccount only).
  • If you're a home, bike or van customer, you can make policy changes or requests using our online forms.

If you do phone, we may only be able to deal with your query if:

  • Your policy is due to renew and you're concerned it's no longer suitable for you or you're thinking of cancelling your insurance, or
  • You are worried about making future payments, or
  • You're in a vulnerable situation or an NHS or frontline health care worker who can't easily access our online services, or
  • You need to make a claim and your vehicle is un-driveable or if you need urgent roadside assistance.

Here's some information to help you get to grips with telematics car insurance:

What is telematics car insurance?

Telematics (or black box) insurance is different to other types of insurance because your premium's calculated on your personal driving style. It basically means insurers focus on your specific driving when working out the cost of your cover, rather than basing the price on generalisations made about your age or driving experience.

As you probably know if you've just passed your test, insurance can be pretty steep for young or new drivers, and that's because they're more likely to be involved in an accident and claim on their policy. According to road safety charity Brake's website, drivers aged 17-19 account for just 1.5% of UK licence holders, but are involved in 9% of all fatal and serious accidents when they're behind the wheel.

You automatically get considered 'high risk' if you're young, but a SmartMiles policy from Hastings Direct gives you a chance to prove you're a great driver and cut insurance costs upon renewal.

What is a telematics system?

A telematics system takes the form of a small, black box that's fitted onto your car, usually under the bonnet or dashboard (though this will depend on the actual device and your car's model). Don't worry, you don't have to do this – take out a SmartMiles policy and we'll arrange for your box to be installed by one of our professional engineers. Or, we can send you an easy to install box you can fit yourself.

The telematics system is similar to the GPS on your smartphone or Sat Nav, in that it uses satellite technology and telemetry to gather data. One added benefit of this technology is if your car's stolen, having a black box will make it easier to track down and recover.

What does a telematics box record?

A black box will capture lots of information about your driving style, such as:

  • Your speed
  • How often you drive
  • The types of road you drive on
  • How you accelerate and brake
  • The times of day you drive

How does telematics insurance work?

Take out a SmartMiles policy and the data captured by your telematics device will be transmitted back to the Hastings Direct team. This information will give us a great picture of the kind of driver you are – we'll compare against national data on safe driving measures and set your premium based on this.
