Hastings Direct is trialling SmartMiles — a new comprehensive car insurance product which enables drivers to be treated as individuals by pricing their insurance premiums based on their driving behaviour. This new telematics — smart box — technology is expected to offer real cost benefits to younger or inexperienced drivers.
Hastings Direct's SmartMiles — Safe Motoring Analysis & Reporting Technology — offers any driver who does not exceed 15,000 miles per annum the option of having their insurance premium priced directly on their driving behaviour at renewal. To encourage drivers to try this new style of car insurance pricing, Hastings Direct is offering drivers discounts of up to 36%* when they initially buy SmartMiles.
The smart box essentially records and tracks the car's performance to generate an overall driving score which customers can monitor through a personalised online dashboard. Data collated includes mileage, speed, braking behaviour and the time of days journeys are made. The dashboard summarises and scores each activity and creates an overall driver rating. The driving rating then determines an excellent, good, average or bad status. Drivers who achieve an overall excellent or good rating at policy renewal will see a positive impact on their premium pricing.
Ben Tomasetti, head of product development, Hastings Direct: "Telematics is a relatively new pricing model for insurance, but good drivers who honour our 10,000 mile annual limit should benefit from great prices. We give our SmartMiles customers lots of tips and advice about how to improve their overall driver rating. Since the trial started, over 87% of our SmartMiles customers have already achieved either good or excellent score and are on track save money at renewal."
