Open challenge will raise funds for cystic fibrosis research
If you have ever wanted to abseil down Conquest House — the headquarters of insurance broker Hastings Direct — in Collington Avenue — now you can for a great charity — Cystic Fibrosis. (Charity number 1079049).
On Sunday June 17th there are 120 places up for grabs for anyone who would like to do an abseil. The cost is £65 and all profits will go to Cystic Fibrosis. The price will include the abseil, a T shirt, certificate and commemorative photograph.
The event is being organised by Barcelona Boomerang — a charity challenge aiming to raise £50,000 for Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited diseases affecting over 9,000 people in the UK. It is caused by a faulty gene that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of the cells within the body. CF affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. Currently half of the CF population will live past 41 years of age, and improvements in treatments mean a baby born today is expected to live even longer.
The abseil is just one of many events being organised by Barcelona Boomerang — twitter.com/barcelonaboom which will culminate in the ultimate challenge in September this year when the group of friends will try to defy all odds in a unique cycling challenge; cycling from Hastings to Barcelona and back — that's a staggering 2,000 miles in seven days!
Henry Broadhurst is one of the founding friends of Barcelona Boomerang and was inspired to participate and organise the challenge in aid of his friend James Beeching who is a CF sufferer. "Our group of friends wanted to do something special to raise money to help the CF Trust in their continued research into gene therapy. There are 10 of us in the BB team including James who is one of the support crew.
"We have been overwhelmed by the support that everyone in Hastings and Bexhill has shown. We would like to thank Hastings Direct for the use of its headquarters and many of their staff are delighted to have the chance to step off the roof of their office all in a good cause — so why not come along and join in the fun."
