Securing Your Home

By taking a few simple measures, you could dramatically reduce the risk of burglary and theft from your home. Here at Hastings Direct, we've put together some helpful tips on how to secure your home. We hope they help you.

  • Make sure the exterior of your house is well lit. Exterior lights need to be high up and out of reach, placed near doors and to the rear of the house.
  • Don't leave any items in your garden, particularly ladders or spades, that could be used to break into your house.
  • If you have a long driveway, gravel is a good deterrent for burglars.
  • Use an ultraviolet pen to mark all your possession of value. Include your name and full address.
  • Always change the locks when you move into a new property.
  • Window locks and mortice locks are good deterrents.
  • Never leave valuable items on view.
  • Never leave spare keys hidden in obvious places outside, like in a plant pot.
  • If you're away, even for the night, use timers on lights to make it look like you are in.
