Flooding
Floods can wreak havoc on your home and possessions, regardless of whether it occurs through a burst pipe or through storm damage. Increasingly turbulent weather has meant many homeowners are now finding themselves at a higher risk of flooding. In fact, over 5 million people in England and Wales live and work in properties that are at risk from flooding from rivers or the sea.*
At Hastings Direct, we provide insurance against flood and water damage as standard on our home insurance policies, so you can be sure your home is protected should the worst happen. We all hope never to have to deal with this but here are some helpful tips so that you can be prepared for the worst.
How to prepare for flooding and help prevent damage or loss:
- Check all gutters and water run off points are clear and unblocked.
- If possible, leave vehicles on high ground.
- If a storm is coming, switch off all electrical items and central heating.
- Transfer all important documents into watertight bags/containers and store them somewhere dry.
- If you know you are at risk of high flooding, defense products, such as sandbags, are available to buy for your home.
- Keep informed by local TV and radio.
What to do after storms or floods:
- If it is safe to do so, remove as much debris as you can. Be careful, as there may be hidden dangers in the water such as sharp objects, raised manhole covers and pollution - we strongly advise you wear protective clothing.
- If you are stranded contact the emergency services immediately.
- If your electricity supply is not already switched off at the mains, get a qualified person to do this. DO NOT touch sources of electricity when standing in water.
- Contact your insurance broker or insurance company immediately so they can help make sure your claim is dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible.
